SEISMIC RETROFIT IN A SENSITIVE HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT

Service Overview

Saunders Seismic completed a seismic retrofit for Marin Cancer Medical Center, an active healthcare facility treating immunocompromised patients. The project required extreme care, infection control, and full coordination with medical staff to avoid disrupting operations.

Challenges

This retrofit presented multiple complexities due to the sensitive nature of the facility. As an active medical center treating immunocompromised patients, the project demanded heightened safety measures, strict adherence to infection control protocols, and zero disruption to patient care. All construction activities were required to occur during off-hours, placing added pressure on scheduling and coordination.

The team also had to implement and follow a formal Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) and Infection Control Mitigation Plan (ICMP), which involved daily inspections and close collaboration with hospital staff. In addition, negative air pressure containment systems and air scrubbers were essential to prevent dust, debris, and airborne particles from entering patient areas—further complicating execution in an already demanding environment.
